Cyprinids make excellent fish for the aquarium with over 1,500 species to choose from ranging in size from around 2.5cm to 30cm.  Cyprinids are very adaptable fish with species falling into both the tropical and coldwater fish range.

Within aquarium circles, the three main tropical groups are barbs, danios and rasboras.  The favourite coldwater groups include the goldfish, together with its many varieties.

Cyprinids are sometimes called “opportunistic spawners,” ripe adults come together to spawn using egg-scattering methods without generally exercising any parental care.

Cyprinids are generally easy to keep.  They are very adaptable to their environment and resistant to disease.  Apart from a varied diet, all they need is a clean and suitably furnished aquarium.
